Biosecurity is the practice of preventing infectious diseases from entering or spreading through an animal collection. For green tree python keepers, good biosecurity is especially important because a snake can appear healthy while still carrying an infectious organism. Once a disease enters a collection, it may spread between animals through direct contact, contaminated hands, equipment, enclosure surfaces, feeding tools, or other materials.
One important part of biosecurity is testing new green tree pythons for nidovirus. Reptile nidoviruses can cause serious respiratory disease and may spread between snakes. Testing helps identify infected animals before they are introduced to the rest of a collection. A new chondro should therefore be quarantined separately and tested before sharing space, tools, or equipment with established animals. Testing is not a replacement for quarantine, but it provides another important layer of protection.
Preventing cross-contamination is equally important. Hands should be cleaned between handling animals or working in different enclosures. Hand sanitizer can help reduce the transfer of microorganisms when used properly, although visibly dirty hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water. Feeding tongs, water containers, cleaning supplies, and other equipment should also be kept separate whenever possible, especially for animals in quarantine.
Biosecurity may seem like extra work, but it protects the entire collection. Quarantine, nidovirus testing, clean hands, dedicated equipment, and careful handling practices greatly reduce the chance that one newly acquired animal will expose every other chondro in your care.
Green tree pythons can be successfully housed in several types of enclosures, including plastic tubs, PVC enclosures, and glass terrariums. Each option can work well when temperature, humidity, ventilation, security, and appropriate perches are properly maintained.
Plastic tubs are commonly used for hatchlings, juveniles, quarantine, and sometimes adults. Two major advantages are that tubs are inexpensive and they hold heat and humidity very efficiently. They are also easy to clean and disinfect. The disadvantages are reduced visibility and limited natural ventilation unless additional air holes are added. Tubs may also provide less space for elaborate climbing arrangements.
PVC enclosures are a popular choice for adult chondros. Two advantages are excellent insulation and strong humidity retention, making environmental conditions easier to control. PVC cages are also durable, lightweight, and easy to customize with perches, heating, and ventilation. The disadvantages are their higher initial cost and the fact that poorly ventilated PVC cages can retain too much moisture or stale air if they are not set up correctly.
Glass terrariums provide excellent visibility and can create an attractive naturalistic display. They also allow keepers to observe their animals without opening the enclosure. However, glass loses heat more quickly than plastic or PVC, which can make temperature control more difficult. Glass terrariums may also require more frequent misting or environmental adjustment because humidity can escape quickly through screened tops.
No single enclosure type is automatically best. A suitable chondro enclosure should provide secure climbing perches, proper temperatures, appropriate humidity, adequate airflow, and enough space for the animal to rest comfortably and thermoregulate.

Perches are one of the most important features of a green tree python enclosure. Chondros are highly arboreal and spend much of their time resting on branches or horizontal supports, so the type, size, and placement of perches can directly affect their comfort and ability to move naturally.
Perches can be made from natural branches, PVC pipe, removable plastic rods, or other smooth, sturdy materials. Natural branches provide a more realistic appearance and can offer different textures and diameters. However, they should be thoroughly cleaned and securely mounted. PVC or plastic perches are popular because they are easy to sanitize, resistant to moisture, and simple to remove during enclosure cleaning.
Perch diameter should be appropriate for the size of the snake. As a general rule, the snake should be able to comfortably wrap its body around the perch without the perch being excessively thin or oversized. Hatchlings and small juveniles usually benefit from smaller-diameter perches, while adults should be provided with thicker, more supportive options. Offering more than one diameter allows the animal to choose what feels most comfortable.
Perches should be positioned securely and should not rotate, collapse, or shift under the snake’s weight. Providing multiple perch locations at different heights also gives the chondro choices within its temperature gradient.
The goal is not to fill the enclosure with branches. A few well-positioned, secure perches that allow comfortable resting, climbing, and thermoregulation are usually more useful than an overcrowded enclosure.
The substrate used in a green tree python enclosure should be safe, easy to maintain, and appropriate for the enclosure’s humidity and cleaning routine. There is no single substrate that works best for every keeper, and both naturalistic and simple setups can be successful when they are kept clean and dry enough to prevent bacterial or fungal buildup.
Coco bark is a popular option because it holds some moisture while still allowing the surface to dry between misting cycles. It also creates a natural appearance and can help maintain moderate humidity. However, coco bark should not be kept constantly saturated, and soiled areas should be removed promptly.
Paper towel is another excellent option, especially for hatchlings, quarantine animals, or snakes that require close monitoring. It is inexpensive, easy to replace, and makes it simple to observe urine, feces, blood, parasites, or other abnormalities. Its main disadvantage is that it does not provide a naturalistic appearance and usually requires more frequent replacement.
Other safe options may include cypress mulch, certain reptile-safe coconut fiber products, or properly prepared bioactive substrates. These materials can work well when used with appropriate ventilation and moisture control. Avoid substrates that are dusty, heavily scented, chemically treated, or likely to cause irritation. Cedar and similar aromatic woods should not be used.
Whatever substrate is selected, cleanliness is more important than appearance. Waste, shed skin, spilled water, and heavily soiled material should be removed promptly. The enclosure should remain clean, well ventilated, and free of persistently wet areas.
The best substrate is one that supports proper humidity while remaining safe, sanitary, and easy for the keeper to maintain consistently.
Green tree pythons require a stable environment that provides appropriate temperatures, humidity, and airflow. Because they are ectothermic, they depend on their surroundings to regulate body temperature. A properly heated enclosure should provide a temperature gradient rather than one uniform temperature throughout the cage.
For most chondros, a daytime warm area of approximately 84–86°F works well, while the cooler areas of the enclosure can remain around 78–82°F. This allows the snake to move between warmer and cooler areas as needed. Nighttime temperatures can drop slightly, but temperatures should generally remain stable and should not fall excessively. Overheating can be more dangerous than keeping the enclosure slightly cooler, so all heating equipment should be controlled by a reliable thermostat.
Radiant heat panels and other externally controlled heating methods are commonly used because they can provide gentle, consistent warmth. Heat sources should never create surfaces hot enough to burn the animal.
Humidity is also important, but green tree pythons do not need to remain constantly wet. A general humidity range of approximately 50–70% is appropriate for many setups, with temporary increases following misting. The enclosure should be allowed to partially dry between misting cycles.
Good ventilation is just as important as humidity. Constantly wet surfaces and stagnant air can encourage bacterial or fungal growth and may contribute to respiratory problems. Fresh drinking water should always be available.
The goal is balance: stable temperatures, moderate humidity, clean airflow, and enough variation within the enclosure for the snake to choose where it is most comfortable.

Water and proper hydration are important parts of green tree python husbandry. Although chondros come from humid environments, good hydration does not mean keeping the enclosure constantly wet. The goal is to provide fresh drinking water, appropriate humidity, periodic moisture, and adequate airflow.
A clean water bowl should always be available. The bowl should be large enough for the snake to drink comfortably, but it does not need to be large enough for the animal to soak. Water should be changed regularly and immediately whenever it becomes contaminated with waste, substrate, or other debris.
Misting can be used to temporarily raise humidity and place droplets on enclosure surfaces. Some chondros will drink water droplets from leaves, walls, or perches, although many will also drink directly from a water bowl. Light misting is generally preferable to continually saturating the enclosure.
Humidity should normally be allowed to rise and fall rather than remaining extremely high at all times. For many captive setups, approximately 50–70% relative humidity works well, with temporary increases after misting. The enclosure should then have an opportunity to partially dry.
Ventilation is especially important when maintaining humidity. Constant moisture combined with poor airflow can create an unhealthy environment and encourage bacterial or fungal growth.
Hydration should be evaluated along with the snake’s overall condition, feeding response, shedding, and behavior. Proper hydration comes from balance: fresh water, moderate humidity, occasional misting when needed, and enough ventilation to prevent the enclosure from remaining constantly wet.
Feeding green tree pythons is relatively straightforward when prey size, frequency, and the individual animal’s body condition are considered. Most captive chondros readily accept appropriately sized rodents, and a consistent feeding routine helps support healthy growth without encouraging obesity.
Prey should generally be proportional to the snake’s size. A useful guideline is to offer a prey item that is approximately equal to, or slightly larger than, the widest part of the snake’s body. Hatchlings usually begin with appropriately sized pinky or fuzzy mice, while juveniles and adults can gradually progress to larger mice or rats as they grow.
Feeding frequency should decrease as the animal matures. Young, growing chondros may be fed more frequently, while healthy adults usually require less frequent meals. Overfeeding should be avoided because green tree pythons are naturally sedentary animals and can gain excessive weight when offered large meals too often.
Frozen-thawed prey is generally preferred because it eliminates the risk of a live rodent biting or injuring the snake. Prey should be completely thawed and warmed appropriately before being offered with feeding tongs.
Keepers should also pay attention to body condition rather than relying only on a fixed feeding schedule. A healthy chondro should appear well-muscled without looking excessively round or heavy.
Feeding records can be very useful, especially for hatchlings and juveniles. Recording meal size, feeding response, refusals, sheds, and weight can help identify changes in appetite or condition before they become more significant concerns.
Green tree pythons benefit from a consistent day-and-night cycle, even though they do not require intense lighting. In captivity, lighting should primarily help establish a natural photoperiod and allow the animal to distinguish daytime from nighttime.
A schedule of approximately 10–12 hours of light followed by 12–14 hours of darkness works well for most chondros. Using a timer is an easy way to keep the schedule consistent throughout the year. Bright lights should not remain on continuously, as snakes need a predictable dark period for normal behavior and rest.
Standard LED or fluorescent lighting can be used to illuminate the enclosure. These lights are especially useful in naturalistic setups with live plants. However, lighting should not be relied upon as the primary heat source unless it is specifically designed and controlled for that purpose. Any heat-producing fixture should be managed carefully to prevent overheating.
UVB lighting is not universally considered essential for green tree pythons when they are otherwise properly maintained, but some keepers choose to provide low-level UVB as part of a more naturalistic setup. If UVB is used, it should be appropriately sized and positioned so the snake is not exposed to excessively strong radiation at close range.
The enclosure should also provide shaded areas where the snake can move away from direct light. Chondros should never be forced to remain under bright illumination throughout the day.
The goal of enclosure lighting is simple: provide a predictable day-and-night cycle, adequate visibility, and a comfortable environment without excessive brightness or heat.
Green tree pythons can remain healthy for many years when provided with appropriate temperatures, humidity, nutrition, sanitation, and biosecurity. However, even animals kept under excellent conditions can become ill. Because reptiles often hide signs of illness until a problem has progressed, green tree python keepers should become familiar with their animal’s normal appearance, behavior, feeding habits, breathing, shedding, and waste production.
Regular observation is one of the most important parts of preventative care. Changes such as unusual posture, persistent inactivity, abnormal breathing, swelling, discharge, repeated food refusal, weight loss, abnormal stool, or changes around the mouth or vent should not be ignored.
This section is intended only to help keepers recognize potential problems. It is not a guide for diagnosing or treating illness at home. When a green tree python appears sick or injured, consultation with a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine is strongly recommended. Some conditions can worsen quickly, and treatments that are appropriate for one problem may be ineffective or even harmful for another.
Snake mites are external parasites that can affect green tree pythons and other reptiles. They may appear as very small dark or black specks moving on the snake, around the eyes, beneath scales, near the vent, or inside the enclosure. Small dots may also sometimes be noticed in the water bowl.
A snake with mites may become unusually restless, rub against objects, spend more time around water, or show irritation of the skin. However, some animals may show very few obvious behavioral changes.
Mites are particularly concerning in collections because they can spread from one enclosure to another through direct contact, contaminated equipment, enclosure furnishings, hands, or other materials. An animal suspected of having mites should therefore be separated from unaffected reptiles.
There are numerous mite treatments marketed to reptile keepers, but products should be used cautiously. Incorrect chemicals, concentrations, or applications can potentially harm reptiles. A veterinarian can help confirm that mites are actually present and recommend an appropriate treatment and environmental control plan. Cleaning the enclosure and preventing cross-contamination are usually just as important as treating the individual snake.
Respiratory disease is another important concern in green tree pythons. Signs can include wheezing, clicking or popping sounds while breathing, excessive saliva or mucus, nasal discharge, frequent yawning, holding the head unusually high, or breathing with the mouth open.
Any obvious difficulty breathing should be taken seriously.
Respiratory symptoms may have several possible causes, including bacterial infections, viral disease, environmental problems, or other underlying conditions. For this reason, simply increasing enclosure temperature or attempting to treat the animal at home may delay proper diagnosis.
A veterinarian may need to examine the snake and, depending on the situation, recommend diagnostic testing. Treatment can vary significantly depending on the underlying cause.
Keepers should also review husbandry whenever respiratory symptoms occur. Temperatures that are consistently too cool, excessively damp conditions, poor airflow, or other environmental problems may contribute to illness. Correcting husbandry can be important, but husbandry adjustments should not be considered a substitute for veterinary care when a snake is showing respiratory symptoms.
Stomatitis, commonly called “mouth rot,” refers to inflammation or infection involving tissues inside or around the mouth. Possible warning signs include redness or swelling of the gums, unusual mucus, discharge, crusted material, unpleasant odor, difficulty closing the mouth, reduced interest in food, or visible abnormalities along the lips or gumline.
A keeper should not aggressively scrape, cut, squeeze, or attempt to remove material from inside the mouth. The tissues of the mouth are delicate, and improper manipulation can cause injury.
Stomatitis may occur alongside other health problems, trauma, weakened immune function, or inappropriate husbandry. Veterinary examination is recommended because treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause. More advanced infections may require professional cleaning, medication, supportive care, or additional diagnostics.
Routine observation can help identify oral problems early. When possible, simply observing the mouth while the snake naturally opens it is safer than repeatedly forcing the mouth open.
Retained shed is a relatively common husbandry issue and occurs when portions of old skin remain attached after the snake sheds. Small areas of retained skin may occasionally occur without representing a serious medical problem. Repeated incomplete sheds, however, can suggest that hydration, humidity, overall health, or enclosure conditions should be reevaluated.
Particular attention should be paid to retained skin around the eyes and the end of the tail. Keepers should avoid aggressively peeling dry skin from the animal, especially around sensitive areas. Pulling attached shed can damage the underlying skin.
Improving access to drinking water, maintaining appropriate humidity, and allowing the animal access to suitable surfaces may help support normal shedding. Persistent retained shed, suspected retained eye caps, skin damage, swelling, or repeated shedding problems should be evaluated by a veterinarian. A veterinarian can also determine whether what appears to be retained shed is actually another skin condition.
A rectal or cloacal prolapse occurs when tissue protrudes through the snake’s vent. It may appear as pink, red, or swollen tissue extending outside the body.
A prolapse should be considered an urgent veterinary issue. Exposed internal tissue can become dry, contaminated, swollen, or damaged relatively quickly. Keepers should avoid trying to force the tissue back inside without professional instruction. Improper manipulation can cause additional trauma.
While arranging veterinary care, the priority is generally to prevent the exposed tissue from becoming dry or further injured. A reptile veterinarian should provide specific guidance for the individual situation. There are multiple possible reasons a snake may prolapse, including excessive straining, digestive problems, parasites, reproductive problems, trauma, or other medical conditions. Even when the tissue can be successfully returned to its normal position, identifying the underlying cause is important because prolapse can recur.
Preventative care begins with knowing what is normal for your individual animal.
Regularly observe your green tree python’s breathing, body condition, posture, activity level, appetite, shedding, waste, skin, mouth, and overall appearance. Maintaining simple records of feeding, shedding, weight, and unusual observations can make subtle changes easier to recognize over time. Good husbandry and biosecurity can reduce many risks, but they cannot eliminate illness entirely.
Most importantly, reptile keepers should recognize the limits of home care. Online discussions, breeder experience, husbandry groups, and educational websites can be valuable sources of general information, but they cannot physically examine an animal, perform diagnostic testing, prescribe appropriate medication, or determine the exact cause of a medical problem.
When something appears abnormal, contacting a qualified veterinarian early is usually safer than waiting for the problem to become severe. Green tree python keepers should ideally establish a relationship with a reptile-experienced veterinarian before an emergency occurs. Knowing where you will take your animal, how far away the clinic is, and whether it provides emergency reptile services can save valuable time.
